The US furthers sanctions against Mauritania junta Print E-mail
Monday, 22 September 2008

The US State Department has freezed Mauritania file at Millennium Change Corporation over coup, media source said Saturday.

The closing of the file comes as the State Department commity headed the MCC’s members-assessment meeting in the US. It comes ahead of US vowed sanctions against the ruling junta in the North African country.

Mauritania was admitted to the institution that works on promoting economic development as late as December 2007, where it was accorded the threshold membership. It was selected among countries eligible for funding from the Millennium Challenge Account.

It was expected before the “freezing” decision that Mauritania would benefit from 400$ million as a MCC member.
The US has threatened sanctions on Mauritania’s ruling junta. A State Department letter posted earlier this month said the coup “can not be tolerated”.
