Ould Bedrdin: the military’s ultimate goal is to depose the President
Page 2

Deputy President of UPF, Moustapha Ould Bedrdin, said today the current political crisis Mauritania passes by is still on. Speaking to Al-Khaleej newspaper, Mr Bedrdin said the military are the real ones behind the crisis and they seek to overthrow the entire democratic system.

“It is obvious now they did not stop at their initial demands.” he said “They seek to either render the President powerless or to depose him by traditional coup followed by promises to organise presidential elections and giving back power to civil institutions”.

we need a leader, we need food, we need homes, we need hospitals, we need education, we need work, we need clean water, we need to live for once we just want to live....if anyone thinks that he or she can provide all this let him or her lead....damn

thnx taqadoumi for the kind words. I'm very much interested in getting to know you and will drop a word once i'm ready, we can then swap contacts.

Arabia, The above breakdown sums up the urgent priorities of our people, though they seem not to top the agenda of the current government. It's just sad that highest building in NKTT is still the eight-story Affarco which dates back to the late Mokhtar O. Dadah and that we sill collect taxes form the poor and the needy (taxi drivers) for traffic lights which are not there. It's also unfortunate that the government keeps spending lots of money to rehabilitate roads which were built thirty years ago.

All this is to say that our plans to modernize the country were put on hold since the coup of 1978. I'm not a Dadahist or nostalgic but successive governments from that time on did nothing to make the necessary break from traditional style of life and effect a genuine takeoff into modernity. Roads, Hospitals, schools, high-rise buildings, etc. are worthy, to my mind, because of the modern style of life they stand for. They mean among other things, prosperity, wealth-generating economic system, organization, Law, and decent conditions of living. Their absence means the opposite, and this is where we are now without any achievements on the path of modernity and expecting none.

Your second point can not be more true, i.e. lack of democracy. What is going on now inside the government is just a distraction from the real test of development which explains why our democracy failed until now to reflect positively on the life of the people. Why the much-publicized democratic leap failed to lead to drastic reforms for the welfare of the three million and a half poor out there in the country. I don’t like to be overoptimistic, but judging by the record of the current government one can say with a clear conscience that nothing has changed and that we’re still in square number one.

please, the following sentence is preceded by a comma and not a fullstop:"Why the much-publicized democratic leap failed to lead to drastic reforms for the welfare of the three million and a half poor out there in the country."
